The Mitt is being presented at the Guthman Competition , happening this week at Georgia Tech’s Ferst Center. “Georgia Tech’s Guthman Musical Instrument Competition is an annual event aimed at identifying the world’s next generation of musical instruments. Every year the competition serves as a showcase for unveiling the best new ideas in musicality, design, and engineering.”

ILinx will be presented at the CTM Festival next week in Berlin. This is a project I’ve done in collaboration with Chris Salter, Tez and Valerie Lamontagne. Tickets are also sold separately and needs to be scheduled in advance.

A woman sits on a chair and from her head several strings emerge to form a network structure like dendritic trees of neurons. These cells generate electric signals based on potential voltage and the reaction to outside stimuli. Strings of Thought 2 is an interactive installation that invites the audience to explore and play with a musical meta-instrument and collaboratively create an intricate soundscape. Strings of Thought 2 was premiered at Harvestworks (NY) on May 2013.

Contact is both an interactive installation and a performance of electronic music. The set is composed of several instruments that are first played by Ivan Franco, but later offered to the audience, inviting participation and collaboration in the musical event. These meta-instruments are connected to a central software that ensures that all the components are driven together by a central hub, thus creating a coherent musical output. In “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”, Steven Spielberg explores the idea of music patterns as a means to communicate with alien life.

During the last year I’ve been creating a new dance piece with Lígia Teixeira. Strings of Thought is being developed to be premiered at Guimarães 2012 - European Capital of Culture, and will be performed from the 11-13th July. This piece is evocative of the confrontation between our desires and the reality of who we are. It is materialized through a fantastic setup of cable suspensions, which interactively create sound and light for the dance piece.

I’ll be playing at the In/Out Fest next Saturday. The concert will take place at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn, but be sure to also check the workshops held at Death by Audio.

We were all very sad to learn that Max Mathews just passed away today at age 84. For many Mathews was considered the father of computer music.
